A modern men’s drink with style, edge, and flair
The Cos Bro Cocktail is an exciting twist on classic cocktail recipes. It combines the warming depth of a good bourbon whiskey with the subtle bitterness of a hoppy India Pale Ale (IPA) and brings a pleasant fruitiness with Cointreau, a little lime, and cranberry juice. The result is a complex, tart, yet surprisingly refreshing drink – ideal for anyone who finds beer cocktails exciting and is looking for a new signature drink.
Ingredients for 1 glass
- 4.5 cl bourbon whiskey – e.g. B. Bulleit Bourbon for a spicy depth
- 2 cl Cointreau – gives the drink a citrusy elegance
- 2 cl lime juice – freshly squeezed, for the necessary acidity
- 1.5 cl cranberry juice – or cranberry nectar for a fruity balance
- 1 small bottle of IPA beer – about 150 to 200 ml, e.g. B. Störtebeker Atlantik Ale or another aromatic, hoppy IPA
Required Equipment
- 1 cocktail shaker
- 1 bar measure/jigger
- 1 tumbler glass or Old Fashioned glass
- 1 large ice cube or several small ones
- Optional: zester or peeler for lemon zest
Preparation
- Fill the cocktail shaker halfway with ice cubes.
- Measure the bourbon, Cointreau, lime juice, and cranberry juice with the jigger and add them to the shaker.
- Shake the mixture vigorously for about 15–20 seconds until the drink is thoroughly chilled.
- Prepare a tumbler glass with one large ice cube (or several smaller ones).
- Strain the shaken drink through a bar strainer into the glass.
- Now carefully pour in the well-chilled IPA beer – this creates a fine head and adds effervescence.
- Optionally, garnish with a long lemon zest, gently squeezed over the glass to release the essential oils.
Serving Tip
The Cos Bro should always be served well chilled. It tastes best when all ingredients are pre-chilled – especially the beer. A pre-chilled tumbler glass also ensures that the aromas don’t evaporate too quickly. If you like, you can rub the rim of the glass with a lime wedge and lightly press it into the salt or sugar mixture for even more refinement.
Variations & Ideas
- Fruity: Replace some of the cranberry juice with pomegranate juice for a more tart note.
- Smoky Cos Bro: Use a smoky mezcal instead of bourbon or add a few drops of smoke bitters.
- Alcohol-free: Using a non-alcoholic bourbon substitute, IPA 0.0%, and Cointreau Zero, you can create a complex yet alcohol-free Cos Bro.
